Mechanic Work Gloves for Every Task

No single glove suits every job in a garage. Many mechanics keep two or three types to hand: thin disposables for messy fluid work, a reusable grip glove for general repairs, and a tougher pair for handling sharp or heavy components.

Types of Mechanic Gloves

Disposable nitrile gloves: Thin nitrile gloves keep hands clean during oil changes, coolant top-ups and brake fluid work, while still letting you feel small bolts and clips.

Grip gloves: Reusable gloves with a nitrile or PU-coated palm give a secure hold on oily tools and parts, with breathable backs for comfort over a full shift.

Cut resistant gloves: Rated to protect against cuts from sheet metal, exhaust brackets and body panels.

Impact gloves: Padded backs help protect knuckles and fingers from knocks when working with tyres, suspension and heavy components.

Thermal gloves: Lined gloves keep hands warm on cold forecourts and winter call-outs without losing too much grip.

Understanding Glove Ratings

Most reusable work gloves are tested to EN 388, which rates resistance to abrasion, cutting, tearing and puncture. The higher the number, or the later the letter for cut resistance (A to F), the greater the protection.

Getting the Right Fit

A glove that is too loose can catch or slip, while one that is too tight tires your hands quickly. Measure around the widest part of your palm to find the right size. Buying in packs of 12 or boxes of 100 helps reduce the cost per pair, and orders over £150 qualify for free delivery.

Frequently Asked Questions

What gloves do mechanics use?

Most mechanics use disposable nitrile gloves for messy jobs and reusable grip gloves for general repairs. Cut resistant or impact gloves are added for tasks involving sharp metal or heavy parts.

Are nitrile gloves good for mechanics?

Yes, nitrile is one of the best materials for mechanic gloves because it resists oil and grease better than latex. It is also latex-free, which helps avoid allergy concerns across a team.

What does EN 388 mean on mechanic work gloves?

EN 388 is the European standard for gloves that protect against mechanical risks such as abrasion, cuts, tears and punctures. Each glove shows a set of numbers and letters, and higher scores indicate greater protection.

When should mechanics wear cut resistant gloves?

Cut resistant gloves are worth wearing for bodywork, exhaust repairs and any job involving sharp metal edges or broken components. For fine work such as electrical repairs, a thinner grip glove may offer better dexterity.

Can I buy mechanic gloves in bulk?

Yes, many of our mechanic gloves are sold in multi-packs or boxes, and bulk discounts are available on larger orders. Create a Corporate Account to get started, and enjoy free delivery on orders over £150.
